Cherryville High senior Lane Harrill was one of 12 male athletes chosen as one of the Associated Press men’s prep basketball players of the year in North Carolina for the 2019-20 season.
Others who made the list are: Cam Hayes, Greensboro Day; Breon Pass, Reidsville; Tristan Maxwell, North Mecklenburg (2020 AP Player of the Year); Jaden Bradley, Concord Cannon; D’Marco Dunn, Fayetteville Westover; Dontrez Styles, Kinston; Isaiah Todd, Raleigh Word of God; Carter Whitt, Raleigh Leesville Road; Dylan Blake, Kill Devil Hills First Flight; Nick Farrar, Apex Friendship; Josh Hall, Hudson Moravian Prep; and Kalib Matthews, Henderson Collegiate.
The AP Coach of the year is George Stackhouse, of Fayetteville Westover.
Lane’s father, CHS Athletic Director and head basketball coach, Scott Harrill said as far as he knows, Lane is only the third player in Cherryville history to be named AP All-State.
“The other two had the last name of Whisnant – Terry Whisnant, Sr. and Terry Whisnant, Jr.,” said Coach Harrill.
Coach Harrill noted there were voters from 15 AP-member newspapers from the state and Lane was in the top five vote getters in the state with 11 points.
Harrill also noted the men’s team included two players – Raleigh Word of God’s Isaiah Todd and Hudson Moravian Prep’s Josh Hall – who are bypassing college basketball for professional options, choosing to enter in the NBA draft.
Lane is happy to be in such august company as his fellow recipients of the AP honor, and is also very humbled to be in the same short list of Cherryville roundball athletes to received the AP recognition; two superb players who he has always admired and looked up to, the Whisnant’s – Terry Senior and Terry Junior.
Said Lane, “This honor is a pretty big accomplishment. It has definitely been a good year for me and this is great for me college-wise as both my Mars Hill coaches, Coach Vick and Coach Alex, know of it.
“Also, it’s great to be in the same group and have the same status as Josh Hall and Isaiah Todd.”
Coach Harrill said some of Lane’s accomplishments in his career at CHS include being fourth all time highest points scorer in Cherryville history with 1,860 points; setting a school for points scored in one game (51) in a game against rival North Lincoln Charter; and heaving a career total of 267 total three-pointers made in his high school roundball career.
In addition to being named 2020 NC Associated Press First Team All-State, Lane is also the 2020 Gaston Gazette Player of the Year; the 2020 Southern Piedmont Conference Player of the Year; is an NCCA East/West All-Star game selection; was selected to the West versus Mid-West All-Star Basketball game; was on the Gaston Gazette All-Gazette Team Basketball 2018, 2019; was a Gaston Gazette Honorable Mention (Basketball) 2017; made Basketball All-District 2019; Basketball All-District 2020 ; and was a Basketball Honorable Mention All-State NCBCA 1A-4A.
He is also an NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award winner for 2016, 2017, and 2018; and was a Varsity Basketball MVP for 2018, and 2019.
