The COVID-19 pandemic has touched all things sports in Cherryville, and not in a good way, so, unless something changes drastically, it is a safe assumption there might be no Dixie Girls softball this season.
This unfortunately includes the state tournament which was slated to be held here.
That said, DYSB director and coach Cheryl Word said by email last week, not so fast… all may not be lost.
“We have a tentative plan in place if things begin to re-open,” Mrs. Word noted.
“We will try to play a short summer season if only just a few games. We met this (past) week (week of Monday, April 27 – Friday, May 1), with the state director regarding some different options we may have if the stay-at-home order is lifted (by Gov. Roy Cooper).”
As for the state tournament, Word said, “We were offered the option to host the state tournament in 2021, and this is an option we did choose to do.
“It was advised that for health and safety reasons that a half-way point would be designated for all teams in the event that a state tournament is held in North Carolina.
“This way, this would try to prevent overnight stays or limit them to a minimum. Hopefully, most (players) could do day travel.”
Mrs. Word noted the plan in place is “to franchise our league and try to play a small season this summer. If this isn’t possible, by being franchised, we will still be able to send teams to the state level. All area leagues in districts that choose to franchise teams will also be given this option.”
She continued, “We were also told that the World Series for Dixie Softball is still scheduled to be held. This is why we were asked to try to franchise in and be able to send teams to the state tournament at a time to be announced. Tentatively the state (tournament) date is scheduled to begin on July 10, 2020.”
Word said she will let everyone know more as they get the necessary information, adding they are keeping in touch with families that registered through Facebook and SportsConnect emails with updates as they get them.
