Against East Lincoln

In this non-conference game pitting the CHS Ironmen against the East Lincoln Mustangs, the cold weather initially put a damper on any sort of big plays.

Still the Ironmen got their first win of this fresh 2020 season, by a score of 4-2, as lefty pitcher Dalton Pence started on the Fraley Field mound last Monday, March 2, striking out seven Mustang batters and walking two. Senior pitcher Noah Ingle came out in the fourth inning, striking out four East Lincoln batters and walking one. He was followed on the mound – Coach Scott Heavner’s third pitcher on the night – by senior Brent Walls, who walked one Mustang batter. The winning pitcher in this first game was Noah Ingle.

The Ironmen got four runs off of three hits.

Doing well at the plate for the Ironmen were pitcher Walls (1-3); Christian Hahn (1-3, in on a wild pitch); Quinlan Sanford (1-3, an RBI); Will Fowler (1-3, 2 RBIs); Pence (two walks); and catcher Ben Huffstetler (a walk).

Against North Gaston

In this away game, played early in the afternoon Friday, March 6, at North Gaston, the Wildcats blanked the Ironmen 5-0.

Starting pitcher Brent Walls took the loss, giving up a home run to Jackson Finger, who was 2-4 on the night against the CHS men. Noah Ingle came in and gave up four runs to the Wildcats in the final at-bats.

Six Ironmen batters fell to Wildcats pitcher Jairo Osio, who went six innings.

The Ironmen produced three hits, and had two walks, but were unable to get a runner across the plate.

The JV game (to be played before the varsity game) scheduled against the NoGa Wildcats was cancelled.

Next up for the Ironmen are two away games scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, at West Lincoln; and the CHS men’s first SPC 1A game on Friday, March 13, against Piedmont Charter, starting at 4 p.m. (JV). These two are followed by a Saturday, March 14, away game at Stanley.

The next three games are home games at Fraley Field against Highland Tech, South Point, and Christ the King. Those games are slated (weather permitting) for Tuesday, March 17, Wednesday, March 18, and Friday, March 20.
