Cherryville High School Ironmen wrestling results at Robbinsville; TJCA matches

(The Ironmen wrestlers had a good showing at the James Orr Invitational, held in Robbinsville recently, with grappler Brady Buchanan becoming only the second CHS wrestler to win the Invitational.

As was noted earlier, young Buchanan is only the second person from CHS to win the James Orr Memorial Invitational Wrestling Tourney, defeating Swain County’s James Parton (Fall); Tito Palacios (Smoky Mountain/by a Fall); and in the First Place match, defeating Polk County’s Collier Foster by a decision/4-2).

In the 106 weight class, Buchanan’s teammate Scott Stroupe had three wins but lost to Rabun Gap’s Calvin Spivey in the consolation semis.

In the 120 weight class Ironman Paxton Wall received a bye in the first consolation round but was defeated by a Fall by Swain County’s Cameron Phillips.

In the 126 weight class, Ironman Abram Avery received two byes. He was out in the third round consolation match, losing to Robbinsville’s Willie Riddle (Fall).

CHS’ Ryan Riffle (in the 138 weight class) lost in the Championship Round One; received a bye, won over Smoky Mountain’s Shawn Byfield (Fall), but was defeated in the third consolation round by Murphy’s Reid Dockery.

In the 145 weight class Ironman Elijah Gibson lost two matches and received a bye for his consolation round One.

In the 152 class, CHS’ Chase Miller won the Championship Round One over Murphy’s Nathan Shaw (Fall); lost to Cherokee’s Darius Saunooke; won his Consolation Round Two over West Henderson’s Milton Ortiz (Fall); but lost in the CR3 to Smoky Mountain’s Ki French (Dec/9-7).

In the 160 class, Benjamin Street of the Ironmen lost two matches, and received a bye for the CR1.

In the 170 class, Ironman Kamaron Bolyn lost the championship round, but won the CR1 over Luis Palacios from Smoky Mountain by a Fall, but was defeated in the CR2 by Tuscola’s Max Coulter (Fall).

In the 182 class, Ironman Jayden Blanton received a bye for the championship first round; won his quarterfinal over Tuscola’s Andrew Brown (Fall); won his semifinal over Polk County’s Gage McSwain (9-4/Dec); but lost in the First Place match to Swain County’s Cody Long (Fall).

In the 220 weight class, CHS’ Tobias Miller received byes in the championship first round and quarterfinals; then lost in the semifinals to Tuscola’s Joseph Hernandez (Fall), and in the consolation semis to Andrews’ Nick Graham (Fall). 

At Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy’s matches, the Ironmen grapplers won against Asheville by a score of 69-6. Winners by Falls or decisions in this one were Brady Buchanan, Paxton Wall, Ben Street, Kam Bolyn, and Jayden Blanton. Seven Ironmen grapplers won by forfeiture.

The Ironmen won against BCHS at this same match by a score of 60-18, with winners by Falls being Ryan Riffle, Chase Miller, Kamron Bolyn, and Tobias Miller. Five Ironmen won on forfeitures.

The Ironmen mat crew also bested their hosts, TJCA, by a score of 54-30.

Winners by Falls were Brady Buchanan, Ryan Riffle, and Scott Stroupe. Six Ironmen grapplers won by forfeitures in this one.
