In a rambunctious game last Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Nixon Gym, the CHS Ironmen varsity men’s team snared their third straight win, this time over the North Gaston Wildcats, defeating the visiting team by a score of 79-59.

The Lady Wildcats, who played the CHS Lady Ironmen right after the CHS JV squad came from behind and won their first game of the 2019-2020 hoops season, 63-59 against the JV Wildcats, had a slim 9-point lead over the Lady Ironmen going into the half, but took off in the second half, outracing the Lady Ironmen, and winning their matchup 52-17. The Lady Ironmen are currently 0-3, but the season is still young, and Coach Carrie Dalton said her ladies are learning and getting better every game.

CHS Junior Varsity Coach Antonio Griggs said his young men trailed the JV 'Cats by 15 points in the first half, but came storming back to win 63-59. They are now 1-1 overall.

Leading scorers for the JV Ironmen were Landon Hahn (23 points); Numarius Good (15 points); and Anthony Roberts and Ethan Honeyman, with 7 points apiece.

My rebounders were Mason Grindstaff, who had 9, and T.J. Thompson, who grabbed 6 rebounds for us,” said Coach Griggs.

For Coach Dalton’s ladies, the following scorers did well in the game last Tuesday against the Lady 'Cats of North Gaston: Terayha Bess (14 pts.); Avery Grace walker (4 pts.); Gracie Hester (2 pts.); and Faith Anthony (1 pt.).

The Ironmen varsity men came out running and gunning, scoring 23 points in the first quarter of the first half as Lane Harrill and Lavonte Hughes stunned the Wildcats who seemed to have come to Nixon Gym expecting an easy win over the Ironmen, who banged in 38 points in the first half.

While both teams had stellar three-point shooting activity throughout the game, 21 of the Ironmen’s 79 points came off seven 3-pointers dropped in by the trio of Harrill, Hughes, and freshman shooter Carson Kelly.

Scorers for Coach Harrill’s club in this matchup against a tough, very good North Gaston team were: Lane Harrill (27 pts.); Lavonte Hughes (18 pts.); Carson Kelly (11 pts.); Dylan Harden (8 pts.); Jeremy Varela (6 pts.); Austin Thompson 5 pts.); and Brent Walls and Jack Mulvey, who had 2 points apiece.

On Wednesday, Nov. 27, Coach Scott Harrill said, “I am proud of the Ironmen and the effort we gave last night. Lavonte (Hughes) is a great floor general and freshman Carson Kelly stepped up and knocked down some big shots!

“Dylan Harden brought great pressure defensively and Austin Thompson controlled the paint. Lane (Harrill) keeps scoring to provide leadership to the Ironmen.”

As far as the schedule for the CHS roundball teams, the Ironmen played on Monday, Dec. 2, at home against visiting Cabarrus Academy, then will be away on Thursday, Dec. 5, at North Lincoln (JV starts at 4:30 p.m.; varsity at 6 p.m.). They are back home at Nixon Gym on Friday, Dec. 6, against the visiting West Lincoln Rebels teams, with the JV game starting at 4:30 p.m., and the varsity teams starting at 6 p.m.
